In March 2023, Zeit Contemporary Art marked its inaugural presentation in France at the Salon du Dessin, held at the historic Palais Brongniart in Paris. The booth treated drawing as a privileged site of experimentation, spanning Post-Impressionism to contemporary art.

Paul Gauguin's rare watercolor monotype transformed the Breton landscape through color and memory. A wartime Paris study by Picasso of the reclining nude showed drawing at its most psychologically compressed and formally inventive. Tom Wesselmann, Andy Warhol, Manolo Valdés, and Amoako Boafo carried this inquiry into Pop, portraiture, and contemporary identity, treating the body as both image and sign, an intimate record as much as a cultural statement.

Elsewhere, drawing served a different purpose: a generator of abstraction, structure, and gesture. Jean Arp and Francis Picabia brought the radical freedom of Dada to works on paper. Niele Toroni, Sol LeWitt, and Robert Mangold tested composition and perception through line, repetition, geometry, and system. Sam Gilliam's unique hand-colored screenprints and Nelo Vinuesa's oil works on paper closed the booth on a note of chromatic gesture and emotional landscape. For ZCA's debut in France, drawing was never treated as a secondary medium. It was the field itself, one modern and contemporary artists keep returning to redefine.
