Frequently Asked Questions
HomeFind answers to common questions about acquiring, viewing, and selling artworks through Zeit Contemporary Art. If you would like to discuss a particular work or purchase, we are happy to help.
Buying and Viewing
How do I purchase an artwork?
Use the artwork’s inquiry option or send us an email at contact@zeitcontemporaryart.com. We will confirm availability, discuss the work with you, and explain the next steps.
Visit How to Buy for an overview of the process.
Can I view an artwork before purchasing?
Yes. Viewings are arranged by appointment, subject to the work’s location and availability. Please let us know which artwork interests you so that we can make suitable arrangements.
If you cannot attend in person, we can discuss additional photographs and options for examining the work remotely.
Can you help me find a work that is not on your website?
Yes. We welcome inquiries about particular artists, periods, and works. Our Private Sales service can explore opportunities beyond those presented publicly, subject to availability.
Can I request additional information before deciding?
Yes. We welcome questions about condition, provenance, exhibition history, literature, dimensions, edition details, and framing. Additional photographs and supporting documentation may also be available.
The information accompanying each artwork varies, and we will explain what is available for the work you are considering.
Is every artwork on the website available to purchase?
Please ask us to confirm current availability. Our website also includes past projects and editorial material, so the appearance of a work does not necessarily mean that it is offered for sale.
Authenticity, Condition, and Documentation
How does Zeit Contemporary Art assess authenticity?
Our assessment considers the artwork itself alongside its provenance and available documentation. Physical examination may include consideration of materials, technique, signatures, inscriptions, and other characteristics relevant to its authorship and period.
Depending on the work, this assessment may draw on examination by our specialists or independent experts, relevant scholarship, catalogue raisonné references, and records from artists, estates, or foundations. Technical or scientific analysis may also be considered where appropriate.
Each artwork is considered individually, with the research and examination guided by its particular history and characteristics. We are happy to discuss the basis of an attribution and explain the documentation accompanying a work, helping you make an informed acquisition with confidence.
What do your terms say about claims concerning attribution or legal title?
Our Terms and Conditions of Sale provide a period of 12 months from the invoice date for bringing a claim concerning attribution or legal title. Please refer to the full terms for the applicable provisions.
Before purchasing, we encourage you to discuss any questions about the artwork’s attribution or supporting documentation with us.
Will my artwork come with a certificate of authenticity?
Documentation varies by artist and artwork. Some works are accompanied by a certificate issued by an artist, estate, foundation, or other relevant authority. Others are supported by different records.
We will confirm the documentation accompanying the specific work before purchase. A separate certificate does not accompany every artwork.
Can I request a condition report?
Please ask us for the condition information available for the work. We can discuss relevant details and any further examination you may wish to arrange before purchasing.
Photographs are useful references but should not be relied upon alone to assess condition.
Is framing included?
We will confirm whether the artwork is offered framed and whether the frame is included in the agreed price. A frame shown in a photograph should not be assumed to form part of the sale without confirmation.
Payment and Delivery
How can I pay for an artwork?
Payment is made by bank wire transfer. Once your purchase is confirmed, we will provide your invoice and payment instructions directly to you.
For your security, please verify any unexpected change to payment instructions by calling the telephone number published on our website.
Does the price include taxes and shipping?
Your quotation and invoice will identify the agreed price and applicable charges. Taxes, shipping, and additional services may be charged separately unless expressly included.
We are happy to clarify the anticipated costs before you proceed.
Can you arrange international delivery?
Yes. We can assist with international shipping arrangements, subject to the artwork, destination, and applicable requirements.
Please let us know the intended delivery location so that we can discuss options, anticipated costs, and relevant customs or documentation requirements.
How long will delivery take?
Timing depends on the work’s location, packing requirements, transport arrangements, and destination. We will discuss an anticipated schedule once these details are established.
If you need delivery by a particular date, please tell us before confirming the purchase.
Is the artwork insured during transit?
We can assist you in arranging appropriate transit coverage. Coverage and its conditions should be confirmed before the artwork is released.
Under our terms of sale, responsibility for loss or damage passes to the buyer upon release to the buyer or the designated carrier. Please visit Payment & Shipping for further information.
Can you help with installation?
Yes. We can help coordinate installation and related services by prior arrangement. Please discuss the intended location, access conditions, and any particular requirements with us in advance.
The scope, availability, and associated costs will be confirmed individually.
After Your Purchase
What should I do if my artwork arrives damaged?
Please let us know promptly, retain the packaging, and photograph any visible concerns. We will assist you with the next steps under the applicable shipping arrangements.
Can I return an artwork if I change my mind?
Artworks are sold on a final-sale basis, so we encourage you to take the time you need to consider your acquisition. Before purchasing, we are happy to discuss the work, provide available images and condition information, and arrange a viewing where possible.
This policy does not limit rights provided under the applicable terms of sale or rights that cannot be excluded by law.
