In November 2023, at the Park Avenue Armory, Zeit Contemporary Art's presentation for Salon Art + Design brought together postwar and contemporary artists who built enduring bridges between art and design: Josef and Anni Albers, Andy Warhol, Sol LeWitt, Yayoi Kusama, and Jonas Wood, shown alongside a complementary section devoted to the appeal of the monochrome. The relationship between form, material, and design ran through several distinct artistic languages in the booth, from weaving and ceramics to architecture and drawing.

Weaving, pattern, and visual repetition anchored the work of Anni Albers and Yayoi Kusama. Architecture, space, and color shaped the practices of Josef Albers, Eduardo Chillida, Sérgio de Camargo, and Frank Stella. Ceramics became a subject of reflection for Jonas Wood and Antoni Tàpies, and drawing served as a unifying medium between art and design in two very different registers: Warhol's intimate drawings from the 1950s, and a transformative 1974 painting by Robert Mangold.

That painting anchored the monochrome section as well, shown alongside works by Sérgio de Camargo, Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella, Antoni Tàpies, and Eduardo Chillida. A crucial painting on Masonite, exhibited in the United States for the first time, it marked a turning point in both Mangold's practice and the development of Minimalism in this country. Other paintings from the same series are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Musée de Grenoble. Within the broader presentation, it anchored ZCA's exploration of structure, surface, and the refined dialogue between art and design.
