Overview
Selected by ZCA
Selected for its status as the definitive scholarly reference on Miró’s paintings, this complete six-volume set is indispensable for attribution, provenance research, exhibition history, bibliography, and the study of the artist’s development across more than seven decades.
Joan Miró’s painted oeuvre evolved continuously from the closely observed landscapes and still lifes of his early career through the radical simplifications of the 1920s, the psychologically charged imagery of the 1930s and 1940s, and the increasingly expansive, gestural paintings of his mature and late periods. Across these transformations, Miró developed one of the twentieth century’s most distinctive visual languages, bringing together signs, figures, constellations, landscape, color, and gesture in compositions that move fluidly between the earthly and the cosmic, the humorous and the violent, the spontaneous and the rigorously controlled.
Miró: Paintings — Catalogue Raisonné provides the authoritative chronological record of that development. The six volumes document 2,040 paintings produced between 1908 and 1981, including oils, acrylics, and works in various media on canvas, cardboard, wood, masonite, copper, and other rigid supports. Entries record title, date, technique, dimensions, signatures and inscriptions, current or known collection, provenance, significant exhibitions, and major bibliography. Whenever possible, works are reproduced in color. The project originated in research begun in 1957 and was developed with the involvement of Miró himself and, subsequently, his Estate.
Why It Belongs
This is one of the core research tools for serious scholarship and market work on Joan Miró. Unlike a retrospective monograph, it is designed to establish the documented corpus of the artist’s paintings and provide the information necessary to identify individual works, trace ownership, verify exhibition histories, and locate published references.
Its significance is heightened by the history of the project itself. Research began while Miró was alive, and the artist participated in its preparation; after his death, the work continued with the Miró Estate. That continuity gives the catalogue raisonné a level of documentary authority that ordinary secondary literature cannot replicate.
