Overview
Selected by ZCA
Selected for its importance as the first major survey of Jonas Wood’s printmaking, this publication offers a focused account of how collaboration, repetition, and technical experimentation have shaped one of the most distinctive graphic practices in contemporary American art.
Jonas Wood’s prints occupy an important position within a practice more widely associated with painting. Working from photographs, drawings, memories, and images of the objects and spaces around him, Wood transforms familiar subjects into tightly constructed compositions defined by flattened perspective, layered pattern, and an acute sensitivity to line, shape, and color. Domestic interiors, houseplants, ceramics, basketballs, tennis courts, museum spaces, and logos recur across the prints, allowing the artist to test how an image changes as it moves between drawing, painting, and different printmaking processes. The resulting works retain the immediacy of his paintings while making the mechanics of image construction especially visible.
The publication surveys more than fifty limited-edition prints produced between 2004 and 2018 in collaboration with specialist workshops including Cirrus Editions, Counter Editions, Hamilton Press, and Wavelength Press. Those collaborations are central rather than incidental to Wood’s practice: printmaking introduces technical constraints, separations of color, repeated states, and dialogue with master printers, all of which feed back into his broader approach to image making. The accompanying conversation with Jacob Samuel places that process at the center of the book and helps explain how Wood’s engagement with print has influenced the development of his paintings as well as his works on paper.
Why It Belongs
This is a particularly strong title for the ZCA Reference Library because it is not simply another general monograph on Wood. It documents a discrete and important part of his practice at the moment when that body of work received its first substantial survey.
The publication is especially useful for understanding three things: the role of printmaking in Wood’s development, the importance of collaboration with specialist printers, and the relationship between his graphic vocabulary and the historical artists he repeatedly references, including Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, David Hockney, and Ed Ruscha.
