Overview
Selected by ZCA
Selected for its comprehensive scope and its focused examination of a central subject in Mapplethorpe’s practice, this volume offers an essential reference for understanding the formal precision, sensuality, and sculptural qualities that define his photography.
Robert Mapplethorpe approached the flower with the same formal intensity that characterizes his portraits, nudes, and still lifes. Working primarily in the controlled environment of the studio, he isolated botanical subjects against carefully calibrated backgrounds and used light to emphasize contour, surface, volume, and symmetry. Calla lilies, orchids, tulips, irises, and other flowers become simultaneously recognizable and abstract, their stems, petals, and openings transformed into highly controlled compositions. The resulting photographs occupy a distinctive position within Mapplethorpe’s practice: restrained and classical in their construction, yet charged with the sensuality and ambiguity that recur throughout his work.
Mapplethorpe Flora: The Complete Flowers, with text by Mark Holborn, brings these photographs together as a sustained body of work rather than treating them as a secondary component of the artist’s broader career. The volume allows the development of Mapplethorpe’s botanical imagery to be considered across more than two decades, revealing the remarkable consistency of his formal concerns as well as the variations he achieved within an intentionally restricted vocabulary. Seen together, the photographs demonstrate why flowers were so important to Mapplethorpe: they offered a subject through which beauty, sexuality, mortality, geometry, and the traditions of still-life photography could converge within a single image.
