Our Approach
Collections acquire meaning over time, through works that deepen, clarify and sometimes redirect the ideas that hold them together.
For us, private sales begin with understanding that larger narrative: what is already present in a collection, what may be missing, and what kind of work would materially advance it. A search may begin with a specific artwork, an important series or period, or a broader collecting objective that requires judgment before access.
Working beyond auction seasons, art-fair calendars and publicly advertised inventory, we evaluate known opportunities and, where appropriate, make targeted enquiries on behalf of clients.
Our role combines the access and market knowledge of an art dealership with the research and judgment of an advisory practice. We consider not only whether a work can be acquired, but whether it merits acquisition in light of its provenance, condition, art-historical significance, market context and the collection it will enter.
Collecting with Purpose
An acquisition is considered not only as an individual work of art, but in relation to the collection into which it will enter.
We work with clients to understand what they are seeking and why: the artists, periods, ideas, materials and histories that matter to them; what is already represented in their collection; and which opportunities may meaningfully extend it.
This allows us to approach private sales as part of a longer collecting narrative rather than as a sequence of isolated transactions.
Beyond the Public Market
Important works do not always appear at auction, at art fairs or through publicly advertised inventory.
Through relationships across the art market, Zeit Contemporary Art can identify private opportunities, make discreet enquiries and approach potential sources when a clearly defined acquisition objective warrants doing so.
Our private sales practice is active throughout the year, allowing clients to pursue opportunities according to the needs of their collection rather than the timetable of the public market.
Focused Sourcing
A private acquisition can begin with a specific work or with a broader collecting objective.
Clients may be seeking a particular artwork, series, period, medium or scale, or an example that shares certain qualities with works they have encountered elsewhere.
We use those parameters to evaluate known opportunities and, where appropriate, undertake targeted enquiries within the market. The clearer the acquisition objective, the more precisely we can assess whether a work merits consideration.
Research and Judgment
Access is only useful when accompanied by judgment.
Works considered through our private sales practice are evaluated in the context of the artist's broader oeuvre and the circumstances of the individual object. Depending on the work, this may include provenance, condition, exhibition history, literature, edition information, comparative examples and current market context.
Where specialist, conservation, authentication or legal review is appropriate, we identify those requirements as part of the acquisition process.
Discreet Execution
Private transactions can provide flexibility not always available through the public market.
When an acquisition progresses, we coordinate negotiation, documentation and the practical aspects of the transaction with discretion. Where appropriate, we can also assist with shipping, insurance, framing and conservation considerations.
Our role is to make the process considered and intelligible from the first conversation through completion of the acquisition.
