Zeit Contemporary Art is delighted to participate in The Salon Art + Design, the leading fair in the United States showcasing galleries from around the world with the most rigorous expertise in the fields of collectible design and fine art.
Reflecting on the event's identity, our presentation will be devoted to post-war and contemporary artists that have created enduring bridges between the worlds of art and design, such as Josef and Anni Albers, Andy Warhol, Sol LeWitt, Yayoi Kusama, and Jonas Wood. An additional section will focus on the appeal of the monochrome in 20th century art, with examples by Sergio Camargo, Robert Mangold, Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella, Antoni Tàpies, and Eduardo Chillida.
The intersection between weaving, patterns, and fine art is particularly remarkable in the oeuvres of Anni Albers and Yayoi Kusama; the reflection on architecture, space, and color is a constant theme for Josef Albers, Eduardo Chillida, Sérgio de Camargo, and Frank Stella; ceramics are a reflective subject for Jonas Wood and Antoni Tàpies, and drawing as the unifying medium between art and design is exemplarized in the intimate 1950s drawings by Warhol and in the transformative Robert Mangold painting from 1974.
Exhibited here for the first time in the United States, Robert Mangold's 'Square within a Square' is a crucial painting on Masonite which marks a turning point not only in the artist's oeuvre, but also in the development of Minimalism in the United States. Other works from this series can be seen in the esteemed collections of the National Gallery of Art in DC, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Musée de Grenoble in France.
